COWES HARBOUR WORKING WITH CEDAR MARINE TO DEVELOP CARBON MANAGEMENT PLAN

           Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) is joining the charge for environmental responsibility among the UK’s ports and harbours as it today (29/11/21) announces its adoption of the Carbon Management Plan developed by technical and commercial facilitator of long-term maritime sustainability, Cedar Marine.

           CHC will work with Cedar Marine to understand baseline emissions across its buildings, infrastructure and supply chain, and develop a trajectory of improvements over a 5-year period.

           Calculating and taking full account of baseline emissions is key to both establishing and achieving ambitious environmental goals. Cedar Marine provides organisations across the maritime supply chain with the tools they need to realise an environmentally sustainable future; aligning with business strategy to outline emissions reduction measures, set benchmarks, and track progress for a supported, sustainable journey.

           Ed Walker, Harbour Master, explains:

           “We are committed to proactively supporting the sustainable development and conservation of the harbour and marine environment, both as the primary shipping and transportation gateway for the Isle of Wight, and as a conscientious member of the wider national maritime community. Cowes is an international focal point for prestigious events like Cowes Week, leisure sailing and commercial shipping, so it’s important that we set an example for the decarbonisation of maritime activities.”

           “Responsibility for driving sustainability in the maritime sector doesn’t just belong to vessel operators — all organisations across the industry and its supply chain, including ports and harbours, have the opportunity to contribute to a clean maritime future. Cedar’s Carbon Management Plan will give us the means to do this in a measured, responsible, and commercially viable way.”

           Cedar Marine works with its customers for a minimum period of 3 years to agree a clear pathway for emissions reductions, tracking progress along the way. In partnering with CHC, it recognises the key role ports and harbours play in supporting the sustainability of the maritime sector, and is undertaking this project with a view to inspire new interest in Carbon Management Plans in similar service providers across the UK.

           Owen Preece, Managing Director of Cedar Marine, said:

           “For any business in any sector, knowing where to start on the journey towards decarbonisation is as important as knowing where you want to end up – and no one who wants to get anywhere starts their voyage without a map.

           “An analytical and targeted approach to decarbonisation empowers all maritime players to focus their resources on key emissions generation within their operations and infrastructure, to realise tangible reductions. We’re very happy to be able to work with Cowes Harbour Commission as our first port partner to facilitate this journey, and we hope their pioneering step will trigger a turning point in the ports and harbours sector as to how it approaches and commits to long-term, meaningful sustainability.”

CEDAR MARINE LAUNCHES THE CARBON MANAGEMENT PLAN TO EMPOWER THE TRANSITION TO MARITIME SUSTAINABILITY

           Newcastle, 30 June: Cedar Marine, the facilitator of long-term maritime sustainability, today launches its business, bringing to market a pioneering ‘Carbon Management Plan’ offering, with class-leading offshore wind OESV operator Seacat Services signed on as its inaugural customer.

           Established to supply maritime organisations with the tools they need to realise an environmentally sustainable future, Cedar Marine operates as an industry partner to provide technical and commercial support to maritime owners, managers and operators. In a first of its kind offering for the maritime sector, the Carbon Management Plan enables organisations to monitor their performance and commit to achieving their decarbonisation targets, while maintaining commercial success, operational efficiency, and compliance with changing regulations.

           Pressure to curb emissions is mounting across the maritime sector, but this pressure is also outpacing the maturity of low- and zero-carbon solutions currently available in the market. While owners are eager to forge ahead with tactics and technologies to decarbonise, the uncertain landscape they face hinders their ability to identify the most commercially viable method of reducing their emissions.

           Cedar Marine works with its customers to understand their environmental impact and plot an economically sustainable course to improve their green profile in line with both commercial and regulatory targets. This support includes business strategy and project advice across:

            measurement and analysis of their existing carbon footprint;

            generation of a dedicated carbon reduction pathway;

            agreement of a trajectory of tracking and reporting against reduction goals, and;

            annual review of the Carbon Management Plan and targets.

           The new organisation is headed by Owen Preece, a certified marine surveyor and naval architect with almost 10 years’ experience, who established Cedar Marine following engineering leadership and business development roles at Bureau Veritas. Its team of highly trained and experienced marine surveyors, authorised by UK Flag approved certifying authorities MECAL and SCMS, hold a considerable track record in delivering sustainability gains for its customers in line with their commercial and operational commitments.

           Speaking on the launch of the business, Owen said: “Sustainability takes many forms, from climate commitments to business continuity and optimised assets. At Cedar Marine we balance these concerns for our partners, examining their environments, assets, business dealings and partnerships to offer the most complete sustainability recommendations.

           “We understand the difficulties our partners face in determining their most suitable pathway to improved environmental performance, and we work to take the pain out of this process. Our carbon reduction consultancy advises owners’ green ambitions and initiatives, and empowers them to enact positive environmental change. It aligns with their business strategy to outline emissions reduction measures, set benchmarks, and track progress on an agreed trajectory for a supported pathway towards sustainability.”

           Speaking on its first-mover status as the inaugural customer of the Carbon Management Plan, Ian Baylis, Seacat Services, said; “At Seacat we envision and strive for an offshore support sector which places the integrity of environmental endeavours at its core, and achieving this goal requires a complete overhaul in how we monitor and implement carbon reduction measures.

           “As the first organisation to sign up to a Carbon Management Plan, we aim to set a precedent for the offshore support sector to hold itself to higher standards and take ownership of its commitment to improved environmental performance. Cedar Marine is the perfect partner to help us track and achieve our sustainable ambitions as a commercially successful and environmentally conscious company.”

           Cedar Marine offers a full spectrum of commercial and technical support services including; vessel survey, valuation services, green finance sourcing, and consultancy on classification and statutory requirements. In addition Cedar provides: oversight of vessel newbuilding, refit, damage, modification and repair; project management; and commissioning.
